Set in the 1920's New England during Prohibition, this historical novel follows Hilda Stone, a practical and determined woman whose quiet life begins to strain under mounting bills and limited opportunity. Intent on protecting the life she has built with her husband, Frank, Hilda makes a deliberate choice to enter the world of bootlegging—not for thrill, but as a calculated means of survival.

A trip to Boston introduces her to a discreet network of wealthy clients, controlled risk, and unspoken rules. Guided by intermediaries like Gustin and supported by an experienced border contact, Tony, Hilda begins to understand the precision required to move goods unnoticed—carefully planned routes, altered vehicles, and timing that can mean the difference between success and exposure. What starts as a single arrangement quickly expands into something far more structured, placing her within a system shaped by influence and power, including figures such as Boston’s bootleg king, Charles King Solomon.

Each decision draws her further into a world that demands control, discretion, and resilience. At the same time, she must navigate what to reveal—and what to protect—in her relationship with Frank, whose steady presence anchors the life she is risking.

At its core, Hilda’s story is one of intention and consequence—a woman stepping beyond expectation to secure a better future, even as she confronts the personal and moral cost of the path she has chosen.
