Writing May Begin Alone — But It Thrives in Community

There’s a long-standing myth that writing is a solitary pursuit. And in many ways, it is.

The early mornings.

The coffee.

The quiet wrestling with a sentence that refuses to cooperate.

But while stories may begin in solitude, they do not grow best there.

Over the years, I’ve become involved in four different writers groups. Each one has strengthened me in a different way — not just as a writer, but as a professional and as part of something larger than my own desk.

Space Coast Writers Guild

One that holds a special place in my heart is the Space Coast Writers Guild, a nonprofit creative home for writers on Florida’s Space Coast for more than four decades.

What began as a gathering of storytellers has grown into a vibrant, multi-genre community offering workshops, critique groups, contests, anthologies, and genuine camaraderie. Here, we don’t just talk about writing — we actively sharpen our craft and support one another’s growth.

There is something powerful about sitting in a room filled with poets, novelists, memoirists, and dreamers — all committed to the same pursuit of better words.

Inspire Writers Group

Another group very dear to me is the Inspire Writers Group, founded by a close friend whose recent passing has made our gatherings feel even more meaningful.

He created a space where both budding writers and those who have been at it for years could sit at the same table. At each meeting, one member presents briefly on a topic related to writing — craft, publishing, marketing, mindset — and then we all share updates on our current work.

There is something quietly powerful about saying out loud, “This is what I’m working on,” and knowing others are listening, invested, and cheering you forward.

His vision was simple: writers helping writers. And that spirit continues.

Brevard Authors Society

I’m also involved with the Brevard Authors Society, an open and welcoming organization that fosters connection among both seasoned authors and aspiring writers.

Membership is free and open to anyone interested in writing and literature. It provides a platform for members to share their work, receive thoughtful feedback, and connect with fellow literary enthusiasts.

There’s something refreshing about a space where curiosity and creativity are enough to earn you a seat at the table.

National League of American Pen Women

Most recently, I joined the National League of American Pen Women, a noteworthy national organization devoted to creative women across disciplines — writers, artists, composers, and more.

It has been inspiring to sit among accomplished and diverse creatives, each bringing her own voice and experience to the table. Beyond fellowship, the organization raises funds for scholarships and programs that support emerging talent.

There is something deeply meaningful about contributing to opportunities that will shape the next generation of artists and writers.

Why Community Matters

Each of these groups offers something different — structure, accountability, encouragement, networking, and perspective.

Craft sharpens in conversation. Confidence grows when others believe in your work. Opportunities arise when relationships are built on shared effort and mutual respect.

Writing can be emotionally demanding. Rejections happen. Reviews sting. Deadlines loom. Doubt creeps in.

Community reminds you that you are not the only one navigating those moments.

Writing requires discipline. Community builds resilience.

And resilience is what sustains a writing life — not just through one book, but through many.

Find Your People

If you’re writing alone and feeling stuck or disconnected, consider seeking out a writers group.

It may be local

It may be online.

It may be large or intimate.

It may be outside your genre.

But your people are out there.

Stories may begin in solitude — but they thrive when we grow them together.

Warmly,

Lynda
